Christensen reinstated, Lawrence Phillips not available for comment

Andy Christensen is back on the Husker football team, the news coming via statement from Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini Monday afternoon.

The senior offensive lineman from Bennington will resume practicing and working out with the team this week, but will be suspended from playing in Saturday’s game against New Mexico State.

Christensen was found not guilty early last week of a first-degree sexual assault charge alleged by a 23-year-old woman to have happened at a downtown Lincoln bar in the early hours of March 8.

He did plead guilty to two misdemeanor charges stemming from the night in question. The 6-foot-3, 300-pound Christensen struggled with police as they tried to handcuff him, and he kicked a dent in a police Tahoe.

Christensen had been indefinitely suspended from the football team pending the outcome of the case, which concluded Tuesday.

“After speaking with Andy Christensen and his family, as well as Coach Osborne, our administration and the Unity Council, we have made the decision to re-instate Andy to our football team. That being said, I have clearly explained to Andy and his family that going forward he will have a zero tolerance policy regarding alcohol and any off-field incidents,” Pelini said in a statement.

Christensen graduated from Bennington High School and started eight of 14 games during his sophomore year in 2006, playing both guard spots. In his junior year, he suffered a season-ending knee injury in the third game of the season against Southern California.

Christensen also earned several academic honors, claiming first-team academic All-Big 12 status in 2006.

While letting Christensen back on the team, Pelini said the program was not taking his misdemeanor charges lightly, noting in his statement that Christensen’s “actions were unacceptable for a player in our football program.”
