A Schedule Softener

Much like Downy is to laundry, the Nebraska football team is to out-of-conference scheduling…a softener. In 2004 Dick Tomey took over the San Jose State Spartans who had previously adopted the “any time, any where” mantra of many small schools, with the hopes of gaining exposure.

Well, Tomey seems to think, that maybe that’s not the best idea. Since his inception as Head Coach, Tomey has asked out of games with LSU, Florida and Tennessee. Tomey was happy to replace the game with Tennessee, with Nebraska…at home, in Lincoln. According to Tomey “It's crazy to go to Nebraska…But it's double-crazy to go to Tennessee.''

After losing to an unranked UCLA team, that would have trouble fighting it’s way out of a Gay Pride Parade, you have to wonder if Tomey is regretting his decision to pull out (which, I’m sure his Dad wished he would have). Tennessee made UCLA, with first year Head Coach and seasoned cheater Rick Neuheisel, and first year D-1 Quarterback Kevin Kraft, look like geniuses in the second half, after Kraft threw 4 first half interceptions. Yet, Tennessee couldn’t close the game out and lost in Overtime.

When asked what Nebraska players thought about this statement by Tomeny, many said the same thing, “we’ll just have to prove him and his team wrong, won’t we?”
