I remember it like it was yesterday. November 23rd, 2001...I must have been addicted to sniffing glue or just plain delusional up until this point in my life, but Nebraska football to me, was unstoppable. It was a powerhouse that rarely lost more than 2 games a season, topped the country in rushing offense each year and had a healthy crop of walk-ons to support it’s tradition. 11/23/01 was the last day I ever saw that Nebraska football program for the empire that it was.
On that day Nebraska was throttled by a slightly under-rated Colorado team, 62-36. We were exposed. At that point in time I couldn't remember if I had actually ever seen an opponent put up more than 35 points on us. All I knew was I didn't think it could get any worse for the Big Red...the past few seasons have definitely put that moment in perspective.
It was visible then that Dr. Tom's last group of recruits were moving towards the exit door of the program and a new breed of Nebraska players were setting up shop. Even without a fully-loaded squad, the 2001 Skers were still able to make it to the title game, along with Eric deservingly nabbing the Heisman. Two huge events that blinded us and dulled what was happening in front of our very eyes. We had a long road ahead of us.
The reality is 11/23/01 was the low point, not this season. That was the farthest point away from where we are today. What we need to realize is that you don't always hit the nail on the head every time and Bill was just a nail. Think of Notre Dame (2-9), their nail isn't even thinking of going anywhere.
Maybe it's our destiny that order may finally be restored with a decision, once again centered around the Colorado/Nebraska game. Have we come full circle? Possibly. Did we need the experience of going through a Solich and a Callahan to realize that there may not be any way to replace a coach like Osborne? Possibly. Did we need to lose our pride, countless records, and respect amongst other top programs across the nation under Callahan’s watch? Probably not…but we can get it back. Goodbye Bill.
